Matt Salsberg Wins 2017 California State Poker Championship $1,100 Main Event

For yet another year, Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, summoned “the best in the west” for the annual California State Poker Championship. Players from the area, the rest of the US, and from outside the US went for the grizzly bear trophy and the largest share of the prize pool, but it was Canadian poker pro Matt Salsberg who succeeded in that endeavor.

Prior to his latest triumph, the player boasted a poker bankroll of $2.2 million. He has cashed in 162 different events over the course of his career, with those taking place in different corners of the world. Salsberg is a former World Poker Tour champion. He won his WPT title on European soil back in 2012. The player bested a field of 228 entries of the WPT Rendez-Vous à Paris €7,500 Main Event to collect €380,000 in prize money.

Salsberg emerged victorious over a much larger field in the California State Poker Championship’s $1,100 Main Event. For the sake of precision, the tournament drew 1,119 entries to the poker tables at Commerce Casino.

The Main Event kicked off on Wednesday, May 10. By the time Day 2 began, the hefty field was reduced to a little more than 50 players. Eddy Sabat led the remaining field into Day 2 and maintained his momentum for the greater part of the day. He also began final table play as the player holding the chip lead.

Sabat was the 2015 champion of this same event. However, his run for another title ended after he lost a clash against Thu Nguyen. The player lost it all, falling in 5th place. However, he did not leave empty-handed, scooping a $44,610 payout from the overall prize pool.

At a later stage of final table play, a winning flush for Frederick Arni busted Nguyen in 3rd place for $85,720 and determined the heads-up match participants. Two-handed play commenced with Arni holding the lead, although his advantage was very slim.

The two remaining players struck a deal before any cards were dealt. They agreed on taking $160,000 each and fighting off for the trophy and the remaining $17,870 from the prize pool. The winner would also receive a $10,000-worth seat into the 2018 L.A. Poker Classic.

Heads-up and the tournament as a whole were finalized late on Sunday, with Salsberg winning a big pot against Arni and finishing the task off shortly after. The Canadian was thus crowned victor and taken pictures of with his winning [10h][As] hand, the mighty grizzly bear trophy, his stack of chips, and a happy smile on his face.
