It might appear strange but in many cases it turns out mathematics and casino games are closely related. Come to think about it, this shouldn’t come off as such a surprise – math permeates every aspect of life and gambling is by no means an exception. There, too, are rules to follow.
It’s hardly a secret for anyone the house always has an advantage over the players. Fortunately, there are always ways to decrease the percentage of the casino’s edge, meanwhile increasing one’s chances of winning. Many players resort to applying different betting strategies which allow them to neutralize, at least partially, the house’s edge and thus accumulate more winnings by simply complying with the system of choice they’re following.
There is a suitable betting strategy for each casino game. Some systems are more universal and can be used in a number of games, others less so and can be properly applied only in specific cases. Either way, choosing a suitable betting system and applying it properly can be of great assistance to all players.
There’s something you need to bear in mind, however. Betting strategies are far from being perfect, let alone a hundred percent effective. Despite their tiny flaws, though, they can help players generate more winnings. In order to apply any betting system, be it based on a positive or negative progression, one should study it in depth beforehand and practice diligently to prepare themselves for using it in a real casino game.
Positive versus Negative Progression Strategies
Betting strategies can be subdivided into two basic types. There are those based on positive progressions for instance. What does this mean? To put it shortly, if one is using a system, based on a positive progression, they’re required to increase the amount of their bet in case they win and lower it whenever they lose. In this case it’s advisable to slowly increase your bets after each win and decrease the amount of money to the absolute minimum, that’s allowed, whenever you lose. This type of system is quite popular among players, especially in card games like blackjack, dice games like craps, as well as in different roulette variations.
The second type of betting strategies is developed on the basis of negative progressions. The principle is the opposite – whenever the player is winning, they should decrease the amount of their bet; when losing, on the contrary – the sum they put on stake should be increased. There are many betting systems revolving around this principle, the most widely used of which are the D’Alembert’s, Martingale’s, Labouchere’s and of course, Fibonacci’s. The latter will be discussed in greater detail below.
The Fibonacci Betting System and How It Works
The Fibonacci betting strategy, applied by players in casino games, rests upon Leonardo Pisano Bigollo’s sequence, developed over 900 years ago. This influential mathematician’s progression is said to have a correlation with all aspects of life, thus it bears the name a “natural progression”.
The Fibonacci’s is a cumulative progression which means in a sequence of numbers each number that follows is equal to the total of the two numbers which precede it. It always starts with 0 and 1 but when the strategy is applied in gambling, the zero is always ignored. An example of such a sequence would be (0,) 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55 – and it can actually continue in the same manner for ever. The idea being, if one increases their bets continually, sooner or later there will come a time when their winnings will overcome the losses.
It’s recommended to use this strategy with even bet units. Let’s say for example a player’s single bet unit is equal to $10. If they comply with the Fibonacci’s betting strategy and their sequence of numbers is as follows 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, the player should raise the stakes after each loss, so respectively the bets will amount to $10, $20, $30, $50, $80, $130 etc. In case the player wins, he/she should go back two steps in the sequence – for example if they have won when they’ve bet $80, their next bet should amount to $30.
However, as it has probably already occurred to you, the effectiveness of the Fibonacci betting strategy depends primarily on how long one’s losing streak is– if one loses way too many times in a row, it certainly would be difficult to offset the losses, not to mention running out of money to play with is quite probable.
The Fibonacci’s strategy may not cancel out everything you’ve lost so far, in most cases that would be impossible. In case the player’s profit exceeds the losses, they’re supposed to go back and start at the beginning of the Fibonacci sequence, with the first unit, once again.
Advantages of the Fibonacci Betting System
Of course the system’s efficiency to a great extent depends on which casino game you apply it on. At first glance increasing one’s bets after each consecutive loss may not make much sense but there are certain advantages of this negative progression system.
The truth of the matter is that at a certain point in the game, using the Fibonacci system properly will probably work for you, unless of course you reach the point of no return and lose your entire bankroll, so there’s nothing left to play with. However, in order for this to happen an exceptionally long losing streak should be at hand.
Another advantage of the system is that it’s relatively easy to memorise and use. One doesn’t have to be a math expert in order to use it properly. Basically, all that’s required is being able to add and subtract numbers.
Disadvantages of the Fibonacci Betting System
Truthfully, the Fibonacci betting strategy, like most systems based on negative progressions, should be handled carefully as after all it is nothing but a mathematical concept. As such it makes perfect sense but in truth it would work perfectly only if one has unlimited money to play with and an exceptionally high deposit maximum.
The system will work at any point as there are simply no deviations from the original formula. But “at any point” may entail a rather long losing streak, during which you continually increase bets after each loss and unless you win, you might end up putting your entire bankroll on a stake (and potentially losing it).
Here’s what would happen in case you lose several times in a row. Your first bet unit is say $10, like in the previous example. If you lose and you’ll have to double it to $20. A third loss will cost you a bet of $30; if you lose again your next bet should be respectively $50. Losing for a fifth time in a row will increase the amount of your next stake to $80! So far the total losses amount to $190. And this is only what losing five times in a row would look like. There’s always a possibility of experiencing a longer losing streak.
A major disadvantage of the Fibonacci strategy is that it works, but unfortunately better results are observed only in shorter terms. Moreover, unlike other progressive betting systems like the Martingale, the Fibonacci system does not aim to cancel out all losses, as in case of a win players go back two points only.
Making Adjustments to the Strategy
Modifications may be a wise idea in case you don’t intend to lose your entire bankroll. And you most likely don’t. You can adapt the system depending on the sum you can afford to play with. If you’re playing with a very large bankroll, you can respectively continue to increase the amount of your bets, even after a longer streak of losses. On the other hand, this tactic won’t be suitable if you have a limited amount of money to gamble with because soon you might end up losing your bankroll.
Players who’ve won several times in a row, thus turning a profit, but have more humble sum to play with, may not go back to the very beginning of the sequence. In this case they may opt for going back a few points only.
Another thing worth mentioning is that the system has a reversed variation as well. Players may pick what suits their bankroll most.
Most strategies usually have a reverse version, meaning that if they’re based on a negative progression and the bets are increased after each loss, the reverse variation, on the contrary, is based on a positive progression and the bet’s amount is increased after a win. The Fibonacci system is not an exception and can also be reversed.
The reverse Fibonacci is based on the opposite principle – whenever you win, you go one unit forward in the sequence, whenever you lose you go two steps back. Most players, of roulette especially, consider this reversal of the strategy to be rather flawed as very long winning streaks are required in order to make a good profit. Basically one needs more winnings than losses to profit – otherwise the system will fail. Like the regular Fibonacci strategy, the reverse version is profitable predominantly in a short run.
The Fibonacci System Applied in Different Games
As previously mentioned the Fibonacci progression strategy is applicable in most casino games, but is said to work best in blackjack, roulette, craps and baccarat. Its application in each of these four games is touched upon in further detail below and as you can see the strategy has both pros and cons.
Players frequently use the Fibonacci progression in the game of twenty-one as it is very plain, easy to follow and above all sound. Others, on the contrary, argue that the Fibonacci progression strategy is not suitable for blackjack since it was originally designed for games that pay 1:1.Yet another reason the progression is avoided in blackjack is that players typically tend to double their bets after a win while the Fibonacci system requires exactly the opposite. One can opt for the reverse variation of the strategy, though.
Another disadvantage pointed out by blackjack players is that the Fibonacci betting strategy only pays out in case of a longer winning streak. At the end of the day, as blackjack is a game of probability, how long your winning streak is depends on pure luck (unless of course you’re a blackjack veteran). But typically in this game, longer winning streaks are a rarity. One way to offset this is by sticking to the progression only when your true count has become excessively high.
But enough for the Fibonacci strategy’s shortcomings. Things in life are rarely black or white only and this is valid for this progression too. The system has some advantages as well. For example, when used in blackjack, this strategy may help players generate relatively good profits in the long-term.
Another plus, is that it does not necessitate such high stakes, unless of course there is a sustained streak of losses. That’s why some players prefer it to the Martingale.
The Fibonacci betting strategy is especially popular in the game of roulette as well. When applied properly, it can help players generate a good profit. Some consider it to be safer than the Martingale system when applied in roulette. As it is an even betting strategy it can be applied in Odd/Even, Red/Black and 1-18/19-36
There is something to keep in mind though. As you have already seen, the sequence begins with two 1s. In case of a good profit, players should go back to the very beginning of the sequence, more precisely the first number 1. However, if the player is moving back towards the beginning of the sequence, reaches the second number 1 and wins, obviously they are required to go back only one unit, to the first 1 to avoid breaking even.
As it often takes prolonged periods of time to return to the very beginning of the sequence, lots of patience and concentration are required. The sequence should be followed precisely, as in case the player skips a unit, they will completely mess up everything and the betting system won’t work. Moreover, the game of roulette is rather fast-paced and because of this some players find it difficult to keep track of the Fibonacci sequence.
What’s important to note is that roulette, too, is a probability game. Following strategies may not always work as winning or losing depends on nothing but chance.
Using a proper betting strategy is essential when playing baccarat, even though in reality it does not affect the odds of winning or losing the game. However, building one’s bets around a certain system may prove to be helpful. First of all, using a specific strategy will prevent you from panicking and making rush decisions, thus losing what remains of your bankroll. From this it follows you will gain more control over your finances in the course of the game.
The Fibonacci system is applicable to card games like Baccarat as well. For instance, if the player starts with a bet unit of $10 the bet remains the same until the player loses, in which case then it should be increased to $20. Lose again and the bet is increased again to $30. In case the player wins the next time, they should go back two units in the sequence, so that the next bet is again $10 and so on and so forth.
The Fibonacci betting system is the strategy of choice of many baccarat fans as it helps them keep track of the amount of money they’ve lost because the further they progress in the sequence, the greater their losses are.
Furthermore, as Baccarat is also a fast-paced casino game, keeping track of losing hands allows players to decide when the table they play at is on a cold streak, thus being able to move on to the next table.
Players who enjoy dice games like Craps can also benefit from applying negative progression betting strategies such as the Fibonacci system. Even if they don’t win big, following the sequence may significantly lower the house edge.
Again, as in the previous games, the next bet should be equal to the sum of the previous two bets in case you’re losing and whenever you score a win, go back two points back in the sequence. Of course, craps is a game of chance as well, so a good amount of luck is also required to gain a considerable profit. Still, following the strategy may increase players’ profits to a certain extent.
It becomes evident, especially with games, based on probability, the Fibonacci betting strategy is by no means flawless, let alone a hundred percent foolproof. But the same, of course, applies to the majority of betting strategies. In a short run, however, it may prove to be beneficial to players.
In any case, if players decide to use the Fibonacci strategy, they’re advised to set a limit for themselves. If a longer losing streak is at hand, maybe it would be a good idea to quit increasing the amount of the bets after each loss, preferably after 6 consecutive mishaps. Otherwise you may end up losing a lot of money.
On the other hand, with games of chance, the players’ odds are not affected, nor improved by the betting strategy they apply, be it based on a negative or positive progression. Following a specific system when placing bets, may be of assistance as far as money management is concerned though.
And finally, players should remember that even the most adequate betting strategy is unable to completely neutralize the house’s edge.
