MGM Macau to Deal with Workers’ Protests and Revenue Decline

News

mgm-macau-labor-protestMGM Resorts’ officials are about to face the dissatisfaction of the majority of Macau residents, employed in the gambling industry.

According to the initial plan, a job action against the company is said to take place today. The event coincides with the Golden Week, when Macau plays host to hundreds of players who come from different locations to the Asian gambling Mecca.

Organizers of the protest are Wu Jian and the association of the workers known as Forefront of Macau Gaming.

Jian gave a brief interview for a reputable global media and said that the number of protestors will be huge and it is better for the MGM Macau executives not to show up on Friday. No further details, concerning the duration of the protest were given, though.

MGM Macau representatives also remained tight-lipped about the way they perceive Jian’s announcement that can also be accepted as a threat.

That’s not the first time when the MGM associates get resentful. Not long ago, they organized another protest and asked for better salaries and more benefits.

A MGM representative made a comment for a local media and said that employees were also discontent with the policy MGM Macau has.

Every worker who does not show up on the pretext that unprecedented weather conditions such as typhoons, deterred them from coming, should expect penalties and a deduction of the vacation days.

The Forefront of Macau Gaming was not defined as the organizer of the demonstrations that took place earlier this week but it gave its unconditional support to the protesting employees.

Apart from today’s protest, MGM Resorts’ officials have to deal with the decline in the revenues as well. Such a tendency has been noticed over the last few months. Optimists who expect an improvement are few.

Most probably September will be outlined as the fourth month of decline. Things haven’t been worse since 2008 when the global economy crisis began.

Nevertheless, analysts see the light at the end of the tunnel. September’s decline is one percent lower as compared to the numbers reported in September 2013.

As a matter of fact, MGM Resorts is not the only company, which has been experiencing a downfall in the revenues. It is not the first one that has to deal with workers’ dissatisfaction either.

The situation related to the revenues generated in Macau-based casinos is really complicated.

Yet, Francis Tam Pak Yuen, the Secretary for Economy and Finance, is one of those who truly believe that the gambling industry in Macau is progressing and it will even mark a slight gain.

What made Tam so convinced of the bright future of Macau’s gambling matters was the fact that August was a pretty profitable month. It was, as a matter of fact, the month when more than 3 million tourists took part in gambling activities, which is a long-standing record.

In addition, managers of Sands China, one of the most stylish and luxurious hotels in Macau, have announced that the hotel is almost fully booked and probably all the 9, 200 rooms will be occupied during the Golden Week.
