Public Consultation Begins on Cairns Casino Resort Plan

A previously introduced Global Tourism Hub plan for the Australian city of Cairns will be the subject of community consultation, local news outlet Newsport Daily reported earlier today. The project was presented last October during a planned visit of representatives of the Queensland government to Cairns.

Kate Jones, the Queensland Minister for Tourism Industry Development, has told Newsport Daily that the Cairns Global Tourism Hub proposal could be particularly beneficial for the region. However, she pointed out that the government will not move any forward with the plan before they receive feedback from residents of the region.

Generally speaking, the Global Tourism Hub will be an integrated resort that will include a casino as well as multiple accommodation, dining, and entertainment options. The project will also involve the planned expansion of the Cairns Convention Centre.

Ms. Jones further explained that the multi-purpose complex could be located anywhere inside a 70-kilometer radius of the city, but the government has selected a Cairns City Port site as the preferred location for the property.

The site includes four hectares of state-owned land on the city’s waterfront and is located not far from the existing Reef Hotel Casino. The government has said previously that a separate casino license will be issued as part of the Global Tourism Hub project, if the latter gains the necessary support.

Politicians have also pointed out that they will consider different proposals regarding the gambling portion of the complex – from expanding the existing gaming facility to the addition of another casino.

Expected Benefits from the Global Tourism Hub Plan

The proposal is hoped to attract the attention of major international investors. In addition, a development project of this kind is seen as an opportunity for further growth of Queensland’s tourism industry.

In previous comments to local media, Minister Jones has noted that the state’s tourism industry is worth over A$25 billion and is an employer for over 200,000 people. Any opportunities for its further growth are thus welcomed by the government, as per comments from ministers.

If approved, the Cairns Global Tourism Hub will be broadly similar to the A$3-billion Queen’s Wharf integrated resort project in Brisbane. While the latter is much larger in scale with its 12-hectare site, the Cairns’ resort is also believed to hold the potential to attract interest from big investors.

Ms. Jones said that aside from the public consultation, it will also seek to hear from representatives of the local tourism, real estate development, and property industries. The Cairns Regional Council will too be engaged in discussions. The Tourism Minister further commented that they expect more tourists, if the project is approved and realized, and that increased visits will bring larger visitor spend, new jobs and additional investment to Cairns, the northern part of Queensland, and the state as a whole.
