argosy-casino-riversideNicknamed ”The Show Me State”, Missouri is ranked 18th in terms of population size and 30th in terms of population density, according to 2014 data by the US Census Bureau.

At present, the state hosts 13 riverboat casinos, which are under the regulation of the Missouri Gaming Commission and one casino of Native American type (the Indigo Sky Casino in Seneca, owned by the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma). The following analysis is based on data reported by the commercial casino segment.

A closer look at industry numbers

Monthly revenue from table games at Missouri casinos went up 8.33% in May 2015, marking a third gain in the past five months, to reach USD 19.348 million. The latter has been the highest monthly revenue since March 2015, when a figure of USD 20.820 million was reported. May 2015 rate of growth has also been the 17th largest during the period January 2010-May 2015. In addition, May 2015 table revenue figure represented a 9.25% increase compared to May 2014, a 6.16% increase compared to May 2013 and a 22.82% gain compared to May 2012. During the examined period, table revenue grew in 34 months and declined in 31 months. The strongest monthly rate of growth has been in July 2010 (23.26%), while the sharpest monthly drop rate has been in January 2013 (-16.31%).

Revenue from slot machines at casinos across the state soared 7.16% in May 2015 compared to a month ago, also marking a third gain in the past five months, to USD 133.054 million. The latter has been the highest monthly slot revenue since March 2013, when a figure of USD 145.040 million was reported. May 2015 rate of growth has also been the 13th largest during the period January 2010-May 2015. May 2015 slot revenue level represented a 1.66% increase compared to May 2014, a 2.16% increase compared to May 2013 and a 1.60% gain compared to May 2012. During the examined period, slot revenue grew in 36 months and declined in 29 months. The strongest monthly rate of increase has been observed in March 2013 (14.00%), while the steepest monthly drop has been recorded in September 2014 (-12.96%).

Revenue from all casino gaming options at Missouri casinos rose 7.31% in May 2015 compared to April, marking a third gain in the past five months, to reach USD 152.402 million. The latter has been the highest monthly revenue since March 2015, when a figure of USD 153.602 million was posted. May 2015 rate of growth has also been the 10th largest during the period January 2010-May 2015. May 2015 total revenue represented a 2.56% increase compared to May 2014, a 2.65% increase compared to May 2013 and a 3.88% gain compared to May 2012. During the examined period, revenue from all casino gaming options grew in 35 months and declined in 30 months. The strongest monthly rate of increase has been observed in March 2013 (14.05%), which coincided with slot revenue’s highest monthly growth. The steepest monthly drop in total casino gaming revenue has been recorded in April 2013 (-12.30%).

Revenue from table games at Missouri casinos slipped for the first time in the past five years in 2014, down 0.01% compared to a year earlier, to reach USD 209.384 million, or the lowest revenue figure since 2012. Between 2010 and 2013, table revenue expanded at an average annual rate of 0.94%.

Revenue from slot machines fell for a third consecutive year in 2014, down at an annual rate of 3.11%, to USD 1.450 billion. The latter has been the lowest annual revenue level during the period 2009-2014. Between 2012 and 2014, slot revenue at Missouri casinos declined at an average annual rate of 3.21%.

Revenue from all casino gaming options also dropped for a third straight year in 2014, down 2.73% compared to a year ago, to reach USD 1.660 billion, or the lowest revenue figure during the examined period. Between 2012 and 2014, total casino gaming revenue in the state fell at an average annual rate of 2.75%, which offset growth in 2010 and 2011.

Since 2010 table games at Missouri casinos have increased their significance as a source of revenue on a consistent basis. During the past six years, on average, they accounted for 11.82% of total casino gaming revenue in the state, with their lowest revenue share being at 11.30% in 2010, while their highest share was registered at 12.61% in 2014.

Slot machines have been a dominant source of revenue for Missouri casinos, but, however, their revenue share has shrank consistently since 2010 (from 88.70% back then to 87.39% in 2014). Within the period 2009-2014, on average, slot machines contributed to 88.18% of revenue from all casino gaming options.
