However, one of the gambling operators has made the headlines recently. The state Division of Gaming Enforcement fined Caesars Interactive Entertainment $10, 000. The reason was that the authorities sent emails, containing information for upcoming promotions and events, to customers who have asked to be excluded from receiving these promotional emails.
According to the laws in New Jersey, players have the freedom to exclude themselves from the website, which respectively means that they voluntary give up on playing. That is one of the methods for limiting the gambling addiction issues and surprising or not, it helped many problematic players overcome the addiction.
The website WSOP.com, managed by Caesars, provides the players with the opportunity to deactivate their accounts either for a few months or permanently. The only thing players are supposed to do is to inform the site representatives about their decision.
In case a player wants their account permanently closed, they also stop receiving materials, concerning the brick and mortar properties of Caesars. Those who close their accounts are not supposed to receive information even for the non-gambling activities that take place in the venues.
Once closed, there is no option for re-opening the account so if one wants to go back to gambling activities in a few months, the temporary closure is the alternative recommended.
WSOP.com representatives reassured the players that those who have deactivated their accounts will not receive any promotional materials but obviously something went wrong and the system sent out emails to an audience, different from the targeted. However, the managers assured that the problem was fixed.
The vice president of Caesars said that the company has self-reported about the mailing and the authorities said that they are bitterly sorry for the inconveniences the e-mails might have caused to the receivers.
More than 250 players, who have received unwanted mails, filled a complaint against Caesars. The time for such claims to be raised was not too convenient bearing the problematic poker industry in mind.
Despite the mistake, made by the authorities, the positive thing is that they realized it, promptly reported it to the regulators and didn’t complain about the punishment – actions, which were considered to be praiseworthy.
The gambling addiction becomes a really serious problem and the fact that a person, who is making efforts to overcome the addiction, receives promotional emails only make matters worse.
That is why the regulations, established by the New Jersey’s authorities, are really useful since they urge the gambling providers report their mistakes and take actions towards remedying the situation.
