
The charity organization was founded by poker personalities and people from other business fields and areas of life with the intention of raising money from poker players and industry personalities. The funds collected are distributed to various charity initiatives. Popular poker pros Liv Boeree, Igor Kurganov, and Philipp Gruissem are among REG’s board members and active promoters.
Officials for the organization said that they were happy with the results posted and that during the previous calendar year, they focused their efforts on increasing long-term donation volume by expanding into industries beyond poker. For instance, strategic partnerships were penned with sports betting exchange platform Matchbook.com and King’s Casino.
REG donates money for causes in a number of areas, including initiatives related to poverty alleviation, risks from emerging technologies, animal advocacy, and cause-neutral ones that work in diverse fields.
The amount of $179,296 or 29.5% of all the money raised last year was distributed to charities that were aimed at alleviating suffering resulting from poverty. The largest portion of the money went to the Against Malaria Foundation. REG donated $102,786 to the said foundation. The money was spent on more than 45,000 bednets that would be protecting almost 70,000 people from being infected with malaria over the next four years.
A total of $61,166 or 10.2% of the overall figure posted was donated to charities working on the reduction of animal suffering. Animal Ethics, an organization that is best known for spreading anti-speciesist messages in various public spheres, received the largest share of the money raised.
The amount of $240,924 or 40.3% was donated to the Machine Intelligence Research Institute that studies the potential negative impact of the artificial general intelligence development and focuses its efforts on making sure that emerging technologies would not impact people’s lives in a negative manner.
REG donated the amount of $119,434 or 20% of the money raised to cause-neutral charities that work in various areas. The largest share of that amount was contributed to REG’s parent organization, the Effective Altruism Foundation.
