A new casino will join the New York state gambling market next spring. The Oneida Indian Nation announced that it will build its third full-fledged casino with almost 500 slot machines and 20 table games.
Construction of Point Place Casino is slated to commence in May. The property will be located in the town of Bridgeport, Madison County. The Oneidas valued their new project at between $40 million and $50 million. It is believed that the venue will employ over 400 people temporarily and permanently.
Point Place Casino will spread over a 65,000-square-foot site and will include a casino floor, different dining options, bars, and a parking with enough space for around 800 vehicles.
Oneida Nation’s new gambling venue will be located 10 miles away from the Wizard of Oz-themed Yellow Brick Road Casino. The tribe opened the latter back in 2015. Tribal officials told media that their new casino will be broadly inspired by Yellow Brick Road Casino, but will also have its individual characteristics so as to ensure that customers will be offered different experience.
Point Place Casino is aimed to further boost the nation’s efforts to compete the newly opened del Lago Resort & Casino, one of four commercial casinos approved by the New York Legislature several years ago. Tribal officials explained that their latest casino will be built on a site that is in near proximity to key highways and roads and will be easily accessed by people from surrounding counties.
This will be the third gambling venue to be operated by the Oneidas in New York. Turning Stone Casino & Resort was launched in 1993, under an agreement between the tribe and the state. Said agreement as well as a 2013 settlement allowed the Oneida Nation to operate casinos on nation land in the Madison and Oneida Counties. In exchange, the tribe has to pay a portion of its slots revenue to host communities and surrounding counties. Point Place Casino will, too, be operated in compliance with the 1993 compact.
The new Oneida property comes as another addition to New York’s casino gambling landscape that many fear is approaching oversaturation. Tribal officials do not seem concerned about multiple warnings that the local casino market, comprised of both commercial and tribal facilities, will not be able to sustain much more such facilities. The Oneida Nation believes that its strategy to provide casino patrons at each of its casinos with unique experience is the right path to success and that the addition to a new property is not likely to affect their business negatively.
The spring of 2018 will see New York cut the ribbon on yet another casino. Montreign Resort Casino, the fourth Upstate commercial Las Vegas-style property, is set to open doors next March in Thompson, Sullivan County.
