Westin Las Vegas, one of the emblematic casino resorts on the legendary Las Vegas Strip, is entering a new stage of its existence, which spans back four decades. The complex is close to completing a planned renovation that will include the replacement of its casino floor with alternative entertainment facilities.
The owner of the resort has announced in a recent statement that it has added an industrial-inspired restaurant to its existing offering. The dining facility, called Jake & Eli, will feature a comprehensive mix of food and beverage options, with particular focus on American bourbon.
The Strip resort’s owner has pointed out that they wanted to make it appealing to leisure and corporate guests hence the casino’s closure. Here it is important to note that the casino facility at the property was shuttered in the summer of 2017 as part of its planned renovation.
Westin Las Vegas’ owner has explained that there are very few areas left that need renovation, including the outdoor pool, but aside from that work at the property is nearing completion. The renovated portions of the resort are expected to be launched in the first months of 2018.
Renovation Projects at the Resort
Aside from last year’s closure of its gambling venue, Westin Las Vegas saw renovation of 826 of its guest rooms as well as of its spa and fitness studio. Four new meeting rooms were also added as part of the resort’s upgrade and as part of its owner’s strategy to make it a popular spot for corporate events and corporate guests. Visitors will be welcomed at a completely redesigned lobby level, as well.
Representatives for the hotel complex’s owner have commented that they have wanted to provide an alternative to gaming-related entertainment, while staying true to the Westin brand.
Westin Las Vegas originally opened doors on July 1, 1977 as Maxim Hotel and Casino. The property remained operational under that brand until 2001. Although it was smaller than a typical Strip resort, Maxim was quite popular among Las Vegas visitors, particularly in the 1980s.
Private hotel and casino operator Columbia Sussex purchased the property shortly after its closure for $38 million and invested another $90 million into its renovation. It was reopened as The Westin Casuarina in 2003. It was actually the first Westin resort in the US to feature a casino facility as part of its operations.
The property was renamed Westin Las Vegas in 2012. At the time, its casino facility featured a little over 300 gaming machines and just ten table games, which made it one of the smallest gaming venues on the Strip. As mentioned above, the casino portion of the complex was shuttered last summer to be replaced with new, non-gambling, facilities.
Westin Las Vegas is undergoing a renovation at a time when other popular Strip properties are being remodeled or are about to be remodeled. Casino operator MGM Resorts International is entering the final stages of a multi-million renovation of one of its flagship properties Monte Carlo Resort and Casino, which is to be rebranded as Park MGM once renovation work is completed.
