In roulette, where you place your chips determines which numbers your bet covers. Check the wheel type, table minimum, chip value, and posted rules before betting. On a standard number layout, a chip in the middle of one numbered square is a straight-up bet on that number. A chip on the shared line between two adjacent numbers is a split bet covering both. A street covers a row of three numbers. A corner covers four numbers that meet at one junction. A six-line bet covers two adjoining rows, or six numbers. Use the designated positions on the table, and ask the dealer if you are unsure. Outside bets use labelled areas for larger groups: red or black, odd or even, one through eighteen or nineteen through thirty-six, dozens, and columns. Zero is not included in those groups. Double zero, where present, is also excluded. For a standard single-zero or double-zero game, a one-dollar straight-up winner paying thirty-five to one earns thirty-five dollars in profit, plus the original dollar back. A one-dollar split winner paying seventeen to one earns seventeen dollars in profit, plus the original dollar back. Covering more numbers changes both the chance of winning and the payout; it does not remove the house edge. Place bets before betting closes, follow the dealer's instructions, and never reach into the layout while the round is being settled. Only wager what you can afford to lose.
