Before your first roulette bet, learn the wheel, the chip values and the posted rules. A single-zero wheel has thirty-seven pockets. A double-zero wheel has thirty-eight. Do not identify the rules from the table's name alone. Ask what each roulette chip is worth and how the inside and outside minimums apply. A low chip value does not necessarily mean a one-chip wager meets the minimum. Position matters. A chip inside one numbered square is a straight-up bet. A chip on a shared line is a split. If you are unsure, ask the dealer before betting closes, and keep your hands clear during settlement. Learn the payout units. On a standard one-dollar straight-up winner paying thirty-five to one, thirty-five dollars is profit and thirty-six dollars is returned including the stake. Outside bets cover more numbers and pay less; they still carry a house edge. Check any special zero rules. In a fair game with independent spins, a run of black does not make red due. A history board records past outcomes, not a promise about the next spin. Set a spending limit and take breaks. A faster table can mean more wagers in the same time; it does not improve your odds. Do not increase your budget to chase losses. Only wager what you can afford to lose.
