The construction of the luxurious casino resort that is to be established in Cairns might be delayed for an indefinite period of time. The reason for the delay is the change of Queensland’s government.
Aquis, the company which started the project, is about to invest $8 billion into the establishment of an impressive resort and casino area. It is to be located at Yorkeys Knob and the hotel will feature as many as 7,500 rooms. Two casinos, lagoon and an artificial lake as well as numerous entertainment and business facilities will be available to the guests, too.
Tony Fung, the executive of Aquis, announced that he is willing to complete the project provided that his casino is given a license.
Members of the Liberal National Party promised to provide support to Aquis and the resort to be awarded a license on grounds that certain requirements are met.
However, the complicated political situation may cause unexpected delays since the results from the election, which took place last week were pretty shocking. The Labor and the Liberal National Party are trying to establish a minority government.
Actually, Mr. Fung is in a favorable position since both parties are among the proponents of the establishment of Cairns-based casino.
What is more, the mega resort will diversify Queensland’s economy and more than 20,000 job positions will be opened.
A representative of Aquis confirmed that company’s executives are willing to discuss the further development of the project with the authorities that will be in charge of the gambling affairs. Yet, they have to wait until a new government is formed.
The spokesperson also added that Mr. Fung has not abandoned his plans for establishing a casino resort and he was looking forward to meeting the new ministers.
Expectedly, there was a question related to the possible suspension that may befall the Cairns project. Aquis representative neither denied nor confirmed that there would be a delay due to the change of the government.
Although the local gambling officials considered the negative environmental impact the project will have on the region to be in the reasonable range, there are some further permissions that need to be obtained.
People familiar with the matter reassured that the project will start as soon as the details concerning the license are ironed out.
There is another side of the coin, though. Opponents of the casino resort are convinced that it will make the gambling addiction issues even more serious. What is more, they consider the environmental impact Cairns casino will have to be devastating.
Expectations are the construction to begin this year and the first phase of the resort to open doors for visitors towards 2019.
