The topic about Scotland’s independence has been widely discussed over the last couple of weeks and apart from being a subject to fierce public disputes, it also made a former London trader £900,000 richer.
The man, whose name was not published, said that his prediction was not based on pure luck or coincidence. He made a bet that Scotland’s residents will disapprove the proposal about the independence, which turned out to be the opportunity that enabled him to live in a lap of luxury. 55% of the Scotland people voted against the independence proposal. The trader increased his stake and won the total of £900,000 last Thursday.
Bookmakers have announced that the bets reached unbelievable amounts and yet, none of the players was even close to the Trader’s stake of £900,000, made at William Hill Casino. Although a great part of the players staked their bets on a no vote, the number of those who believed that Scotland will become independent from the United Kingdom was also impressive.
In an interview, broadcasted two days ago, the trader, who is located in London, said that he dared to make such a great stalk, relying on his experience in the marketing industry. He has been working as a marketing analyst for more than 30 years and he had used the skills, he has acquired during the years, in order to judge the percentage of people who would give their positive vote. His wife was his biggest supporter, especially when many of the local newspapers came up with articles, where the Trader was called a “feckless gambler”.
He didn’t want his name to become public but he provided the audience with some further curious details from his biography. He said that he is a devoted unionist of Pakistani-German traditions and events and he was not absolutely convinced whether to make such a big stalk or not.
The lucky winner shared that the decision to make the bet anyway, costed him a lot of time spent in researches and reading tons of information about a previous referendum in Quebec. Then he knew that the scheme followed by Scotland was the same. The polls, which claimed that the voters who will give a yes vote will outnumber the “negative” voters, were too few.
He confessed that the results from the final polls made him a bit anxious but he was sure that a reversal was not likely to happen.
Many people hurried up to give him disapproving nicknames but the winner said that a part of the sum will be donated to a charitable organisation. As an answer to the malicious comments and the offensive attitude of the public about his “feckless” decision to bet so much money, he says: “I’m trying to warn people this isn’t something we should do lightly.”
