It doesn’t seem like Sheldon Adelson will give up on his campaign against the online gambling activities. He is known as one of the most fierce opponents of the laws that allow the citizens make bets online. He had no hesitations in publicly defending his standpoint last Wednesday during a trade event.
Adelson, who is a CEO of Las Vegas Sands, was probably the toughest opponent of the online gambling activities during the discussion that took place at the Global Gaming Expo Event.
He shared one of the main concerns he has when it comes to online gambling. According to Adelson, it is impossible to understand if the player has come of age that allows him to take part in gambling activities, which therefore might lead to legal proceedings but unfortunately neither the underaged player nor the gambling provider can take the full responsibility if such a situation occurs.
However, many of the visitors of the Global Gaming Expo Discussion were not on the same mind as Adelson. Roger Gros was one of the defenders of the online gambling legalization and he had completely disapproved of Adelson’s arguments. According to Gros, the Internet gives the gambling provider the opportunity to get to know the player even better than during a face-to-face contact due to the fact that contrary to a popular belief, players’ don’t remain anonymous when taking part in online gambling activities.
Despite the convincing reasons Roger Gros gave, Sheldon Adelson was reluctant to change his point of view. Things got even more complicated when Gros mentioned that legalized or not, the Internet gambling happens anyway.
As an answer Adelson stated that such way of thinking is not appropriate and gave the drugs as an example. Drug addicts use prohibited by the law substances anyway but the Government would never legalize their usage.
Such a witty response gained him the sympathy of the public and many of the members applauded him.
Those who know Adelson or at least have heard some of his public announcements shouldn’t be surprised by his behavior. He was, as a matter of fact, one of the leaders of the organised opposition against all states that have legalized or are currently working on legalizing the online gambling. He is also financially supporting the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling.
During the second day of the Global Gaming Expo Event Adelson expressed his fears that legalizing the Internet gambling will make such kind of activities too accessible, including to the poor citizens who might get into huge troubles and lose all their money.
Adelson referred to his background and said that he doesn’t see any point in enabling millions of people, some of whom with a terribly low income, to have access to gambling at any time.
Apart from the topic he is most passionate about, Adelson also commented his successful venture in Macau and said that his dream is making it the Asian Las Vegas, regardless of the decline reported the last couple of months.
