The Lotto 6-49 has been won by a person from Bells Island. Leon Hirtle is a seventy seven years old retiree and has never been married. Last Tuesday he has arrived with his car to the office of Atlantic Lottery Corporation to show his winning ticket. He didn’t cash out the $13.8 million yet as the formal process of doing so is not yet finished. The Atlantic Lottery Corporation is still validating if Hirtle’s ticket has the winning numbers on it. When he found out he has won the lottery he was at a friend’s house who helped him to double check the number through the Internet. In an interview at the Atlantic Lottery Corporation he says that the first thing he did was to go to his two brothers and tell them he won the lotto. They did not believe him at first but after he showed them the numbers on his ticket they said “Yeah, I see you did win!”
Despite what many think, the big money will not change the way Mr. Hirtle lives his life, he says. The 77-year-old man has been working in the fishing industry for most of his life. He says that he will continue doing the daily work around the house such as cutting wood, mowing the lawn and doing other work around the backyard. “Oh, it isn’t going to change my life” he added. However, that is not how his two brothers remember him when he brought the good news. They say he was screaming with excitement. He then adds that it was true, he couldn’t fall asleep that night, either.
Mr. Hurtle is an interesting person, he does not have any children despite having 11 siblings and has lived in the house he currently inhabits for over 45 years. He says he has done all the improvements and fixing around the house. With the $14 million he plans to give some to his relatives and to celebrate with friends at the Bridgewater area. He adds that he will help his two nieces who have kids. He jokingly adds “I’ll have a lot left over. I’ll be able to buy an ice cream cone.” He surely will.
The lonely man from Nova Scotia has had the habit of buying lottery tickets for a while and has no plans of stopping to do so. He shares he even bought two new tickets after he found out he had won the lottery. “I dunno, I just got in the habit of buying them I guess.”
This week he is filling the needed documentation of the validation process and is expected to cash out or get a check of his winnings on the 16th of October. Next Sunday is his 78th anniversary and he is happy to celebrate it combined with such an amazing occasion.
