Macau Has a New Secretary for Economy and Finance

2 - lionel leongMacau-based entrepreneur Lionel Leong Vai Tac was appointed as the city’s new Secretary for Economy and Finance. One of his main responsibilities will be to supervise the gambling industry there. Mr. Leong is succeeding Francis Tam Pak Yuen, who took the post back in 1999.

Fernando Chui Sai On, currently being Macau’s Chief Executive, announced the names of the people he is going to work with during the second term of his office. The new government is planned to step into office on December 20.

As it was expected, Macau’s Chief Executive is going to work with new secretaries. Other officials have been replaced, too. He stated that his new colleagues are a bit younger than their predecessors and that they will most certainly “introduce an innovative spirit to the government.” He also added that they have all been glad to join him.

Mr. Leong is the only newly-appointed secretary that has not been involved in civil service. The entrepreneur will be expected to discuss with the six companies that are currently operating various gaming venues in Macau what is going to happen to them when their licenses expire in the period between 2020 and 2022. Leong’s predecessor had previously stated that these talks need to begin some time in 2016.

The New Government

Lau Si Io, the current Secretary for Transport and Public Works, whose main responsibility is to supervise the issuing of construction licenses, will also resign in December. He will be replaced by Raimundo Arrais do Rosário. Mr. Rosário is no stranger to diplomatic service. Previously, he was chief of mission to the EU.

Alexis Tam Chon Weng, who is now chief-of-cabinet and chief spokesperson for the government, is appointed as the new Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture. His predecessor Cheong U steps down after being in service for one term only.

Local administration will also undergo certain changes. André Cheong Weng Chon, who is currently managing the Legal Affairs Bureau, will fight corruption in Macau. He will take Vasco Fong Man Chong’s place.

Ho Veng On, currently Commissioner of Audit, will be the only official not to resign from his position.

Ma Io Kun was appointed as the head of the local police and security services. He will replace José Proença Branco. The Macao Customs will have a new director, as well. Choi Lai Hang’s place will be taken by his deputy Lai Man Wa.

Mr. Chui shared that he was grateful to all the officials that are leaving. He also stated that their help will always be appreciated.
