Day 2 of the Mid-States Poker Tour Main Event, held at the Golden Gates Casino in Black Hawk, Colorado, was completed a few hours ago. It was local poker star Kane Lai who won the event to receive the amount of $101,365.
The tournament attracted a total of 409 entries. Of those, 88 returned for Day 2 of the Main Event and only 45 were to be paid. Some prominent poker players, such as Blake Bohn, who is an MSPT team pro, and Will Givens, a WSOP bracelet winner, were among those who did not make it to the money.
A total of nine players sat at the final table and it began with Lai as the chip leader with 3,543,000. He was followed by Kevin Boudreau holding 2,296,000 in chips and Danny Dang with 1,400,000.
Wally Printz was the first player to leave the final table after he could not hold up against Lai in Level 26. He was paid $7,935. After Printz’s elimination, Lai’s chips totaled 4,470,000.
It took two levels before another player was sent home. In Level 28, Jon Cohen eliminated Travis Maly in eighth place. Only five minutes later, Maly was followed by Boudreau who was defeated by Nick Pupillo. The eliminated players took $11,503 and $15,076, respectively.
Pupillo himself was the next to go, after he fell victim to Lai towards the end of Level 28.
Soon after Level 29 began, Dang was defeated by Tyler Corbett. The player received $22,614 for his fifth position.
There were only four remaining contenders and Lai was holding a wide chip lead. He had a total of 6,800,000 in chips. Both Corbett and Darek Spring had 1,800,000, and Cohen was holding 1,600,000.
Spring was the next to leave the final table. He was eliminated in fourth place by Lai and was paid $28,763. As for Lai, his chips totaled 10,000,000.
Shortly after, Cohen could not stand a chance against Corbett. He received $35,706 for his third finish.
With that said, Corbett and Lai were the only left on the final table. The last hand of the game occurred shortly after Level 30 began. Lai had [As][Qh] against Corbett’s [Ah][Jh]. The board ran [3h][10d][7s] on the flop. Corbett was hoping for [8h], but instead, [9h] appeared on the turn. With [5d] on the river, it became clear that Corbett was to content himself with the second place and the sum of $58,515.
The next MSPT tournament is to take place at the Meskwaki Casino in Tama, Iowa in a fortnight.
