WPT Amsterdam, the second tournament of WPT Season XIV, is currently taking place at Holland Casino in the capital of the Netherlands. Apart from the Main Event, which kicked off on May 11, players have been given the opportunity to enter various other events, with the WPT Amsterdam €6,000 High Roller being among those.
Although the event in question was initially planned to take place within two days, organizers extended one additional day, due to the considerably large number of players it attracted. The field included a total of 76 entries, who created a prize pool of €420,204. Those were to be distributed among the top nine performers, starting from €12,604 for the player who finished 9th.
The thrilling event was completed late last night with Jason Wheeler from Chicago, Illinois emerging victorious, after a not particularly long heads-up play against popular British player Jack Salter. Salter is known for his runner-up finishes at both last year’s EPT Season 10 Grand Final Main Event and the WSOP Asia-Pacific Main Event.
The heads-up play started with Salter holding about 2.4 million in chips against his opponent’s 1.4 million. Wheeler, however, managed to catch up quite quickly and to take the lead. It took only a few hands before the name of the champion was announced.
On what turned out to be last hand, Wheeler had [3c][3d] against Salter’s [Ks][7d]. The latter shoved all-in and Wheeler called. The board ran out [3s][5h][6h][Qd][8c] and that was all for the British player. His portion of the entire prize pool amounted to €90,000.
As for Wheeler, he took home €125,000, the second best cash in his career. Minutes after winning the High Roller event, he said he was happy to finally get a trophy in Amsterdam. He previously took part in the 2013 and 2014 editions of Master Classic of Poker but finished 12th and 10th, respectively.
So far, the player has a little less than $1.7 million in live tournament winnings. He got his best cash back in 2009, when he finished 2nd in the 40th WSOP $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em event for $418,122.
As mentioned above, the WPT Amsterdam €3,000 + €300 Main Event kicked off yesterday. The event is to feature two starting days, with Day 1B scheduled to begin today at 14:00 local time. The final table is set for May 16. Once completed, WPT will be heading to the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas for the WPT500 Aria tournament presented by partypoker.
