Nicknamed the Old Line State, the Free State, and the Chesapeake Bay State, Maryland is ranked 19th in terms of population size and 5th in terms of population density among all states, according to 2014 data by the US Census Bureau.
At present, the state hosts five commercial casinos, which opened doors to their patrons as follows:
- Hollywood Casino Perryville in the city of Perryville on September 30th 2010
- Ocean Downs in the city of Berlin on January 4th 2011
- Maryland Live in the city of Hanover on June 6th 2012
- Rocky Gap Casino Resort in the city of Flintstone on May 22nd 2013
- Horseshoe Casino Baltimore in the city of Baltimore on August 26th 2014
In December 2013 MGM Resorts International obtained a license to build a USD 925-million casino resort in the city of National Harbor, which is projected to open doors to customers in mid-2016. The site represents 23 acres overlooking the Potomac River in proximity to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Prince George’s County. The resort is expected to offer 3 600 slot machines, 140 gaming tables, seven restaurants, an Entertainment Center with 1 200 seats, a 4.5-star hotel and a number of luxury retail stores.

Three out of five casinos (Hollywood Casino Perryville, Casino at Ocean Downs and Rocky Gap) in the state of Maryland posted three consecutive monthly increases in their slot revenue during the past three months. Among them two establishments (Hollywood Casino Perryville and Rocky Gap) posted four consecutive monthly increases in revenue during the past four months.
In May 2015 Horseshoe was the only casino to report a drop in its monthly revenue from slot machines, down 1.00% to USD 12.076 million. The latter has been the lowest revenue since December 2014, when a figure of 11.789 million was reported. May 2015 has also been a second consecutive month of slot revenue decline for Horseshoe Casino.
In May 2015 slot revenue at Hollywood Casino Perryville went up 5.39% compared to April to reach USD 6.069 million. The latter has been the most notable monthly slot revenue since August 2014, when a figure of USD 6.297 million was registered. May 2015 figure, on the other hand, represented a 6.52% drop compared to May 2014 and a 13.01% drop compared to May 2013.
In May 2015 slot revenue at Casino at Ocean Downs soared at a monthly rate of 16.23% to USD 4.991 million. This has been the highest monthly slot revenue level since August 2014, when a figure of USD 5.937 million was reported. May 2015 revenue also represented a 5.77% increase compared to May 2014 and a 4.56% increase compared to May 2013.
Slot revenue at Maryland LIVE rose at a monthly rate of 16.43% in May 2015 compared to a month earlier to reach USD 36.949 million. The rate of change represented the most significant monthly increase during the period February 2013-May 2015. In addition, May 2015 revenue figure has been the highest since August 2014, when monthly slot revenue was valued at USD 37.955 million. May 2015 slot revenue, on the other hand, represented a 5.17% drop compared to May 2014 and a 1.45% drop compared to May 2013.
Slot revenue at Rocky Gap rose 7.04% in May 2015 compared to April to USD 3.541 million. This has been the highest monthly slot revenue since August 2014, when a figure of USD 3.642 million was recorded. May 2015 slot revenue also represented a 7.88% surge compared to May 2014 and a 356.27% increase compared to May 2013.
In September 2014 Hollywood Casino Perryville and Maryland LIVE both posted the steepest monthly declines in their slot revenue during the period February 2013-May 2015. At Hollywood Casino Perryville the drop was 20.47%, while at Maryland LIVE – (-26.81%).
In August 2014 Maryland LIVE was the only casino to post slot revenue growth, up 3.32% to USD 37.955 million.
The period January-March 2014 saw three consecutive increases in monthly revenue from slot machines at Maryland LIVE and Rocky Gap.
The period November 2013-January 2014 marked three successive declines in monthly slot revenue at Hollywood Casino Perryville and Casino at Ocean Downs.
The period June-August 2013 saw three consecutive increases in monthly slot revenue at Casino at Ocean Downs and Rocky Gap.
Casino at Ocean Downs was the only establishment to report seven consecutive months of slot revenue growth during the period February-August 2013.

In April 2015 Maryland LIVE was the only casino to post a drop in its monthly revenue from table games, -4.56%, to USD 19.207 million.
In March 2015 Rocky Gap was the only establishment to report a decline in its monthly table revenue, -3.69%, to USD 579 486.
In January 2015 Hollywood Casino Perryville was the only establishment to post an increase in its monthly table revenue (15.61%) to USD 954 875.
In December 2014 Horseshoe Casino was the only establishment to report a surge in its monthly revenue from table games (6.19%) to USD 11.120 million. It was also the last month of the four-month string of increases, which was reported by the casino.
In November 2014 Hollywood Casino Perryville was the only establishment to post a drop in its monthly table revenue, -7.27%, to USD 954 479. It was also the first month of the two-month string of declines, reported by the casino.
In September 2014 Horseshoe was the only casino to report an increase in its monthly table revenue (564.53%) to USD 9.056 million. It was also the first month of the four-month string of increases, which was reported by the casino.
In May 2015 table revenue at Hollywood Casino Perryville fell for the first time in the past five months, down at a monthly pace of 5.84%, to reach USD 1.051 million. This figure has been the lowest one since March, when table revenue was valued at USD 1.023 million. May 2015 figure also represented a 21.08% drop compared to May 2014 and a 34.13% decrease compared to May 2013.
In May 2015 table revenue at Maryland LIVE rose at a monthly rate of 9.81% to USD 21.092 million. The latter has been the highest revenue level since November 2014, when a figure of USD 21.322 million was posted. May 2015 revenue also represented a 2.62% increase compared to May 2014 and a 20.09% surge compared to May 2013.
Revenue from table games at Rocky Gap went up for a second consecutive month in May 2015, up 14.21% compared to April, to USD 707 145. The latter has been the highest table revenue since August 2013, when a level of USD 1.406 million was posted. May 2015 revenue also represented a 44.89% increase compared to May 2014 and a 453.46% increase compared to May 2013.
Monthly table revenue at Horseshoe fell for the first time in the past three months in May 2015, down 8.35%, to reach USD 9.846 million. It has been the most considerable monthly rate of decline during the period September 2014-May 2015. In addition, May 2015 revenue figure has been the lowest one since February, when monthly table revenue was valued at USD 9.880 million.
Revenue from table games statewide rose 3.19% in May 2015 compared to a month earlier to reach USD 32.697 million. The latter has been the highest monthly table revenue level since November 2014, when a figure of USD 33.369 million was reported. May 2015 revenue level also represented a 46.15% increase compared to May 2014 and a 69.53% surge compared to May 2013.

Three out of five casinos (Hollywood Casino Perryville, Casino at Ocean Downs and Rocky Gap) posted three consecutive monthly increases in their revenue from all gaming options during the past three months. Among them two establishments (Hollywood Casino Perryville and Rocky Gap) posted four consecutive monthly increases in revenue during the past four months.
In May 2015 Horseshoe Casino was the only establishment to post a drop in its monthly revenue from all gaming options, -4.44%, to reach USD 21.923 million. This has also been the second revenue drop in a row, as in April total revenue went down another 7.12%.
In December 2014 Casino at Ocean Downs was the only establishment to post a monthly revenue growth (1.10%).
In October 2014 Casino at Ocean Downs was the only establishment to post a monthly revenue drop (16.76%). It was also a third straight month of total revenue decline.
In September 2014 Horseshoe Casino was the only establishment to report monthly revenue growth (289.70%). It was also the first month in the three-month string of revenue increases, which was posted by the casino.
Within the period February-May 2013, Casino at Ocean Downs and Maryland LIVE were the only establishments to report four successive months of revenue growth.
Within the period February-August 2013, Casino at Ocean Downs was the only establishment to post seven consecutive months of total revenue growth.
In May 2015 total revenue at Hollywood Casino Perryville grew at a monthly rate of 3.57% to USD 7.120 million. The latter has been the highest monthly revenue figure since August 2014, when a level of USD 7.354 million was reported. However, May 2015 revenue figure represented a 9.00% decrease compared to May 2014 and a 16.94% drop compared to May 2013.
In May 2015 total revenue at Casino at Ocean Downs went up 16.23% compared to April to reach USD 4.991 million. The latter has been the highest monthly revenue since August 2014, when a figure of USD 5.937 million was reported. May 2015 figure also represented a 5.77% increase compared to May 2014 and a 4.56% increase compared to May 2013.
In May 2015 revenue from all casino gaming options at Maryland LIVE rose at a monthly rate of 13.93% to reach USD 58.042 million. The latter has been the highest revenue since July 2014, when a monthly level of USD 58.224 million was posted. May 2015 revenue figure represented a 2.48% drop compared to May 2014 and a 5.42% increase compared to May 2013.
In May 2015 revenue from all casino gaming options at Rocky Gap surged 8.17% compared to April to USD 4.248 million. This figure has been the most notable one since August 2014, when a level of USD 4.251 million was reported. May 2015 revenue also represented a 12.67% increase compared to May 2014 and a 370.01% increase compared to May 2013.
Revenue from all gaming options statewide went up 8.25% in May 2015 compared to a month ago to reach USD 96.326 million. This figure has been the most considerable one during the period January 2013-May 2015 and represented a 27.03% increase compared to May 2014 and a 38.98% surge compared to May 2013.

Revenue from all casino gaming options in Maryland rose at an annual rate of 24.08% to reach USD 931.082 million in 2014. Two casinos posted an annual drop in their total casino gaming revenue – Hollywood Casino Perryville (-5.14%) and Casino at Ocean Downs (-0.16%), while another two establishments reported growth – Maryland LIVE (11.90%) and Rocky Gap (74.55%). Rocky Gap had such a tremendous rate of growth due to the fact that it reported results for eight months in 2013.

In 2014 three out of five casinos in the state of Maryland experienced reduction of their revenue share in the total casino gaming revenue statewide. The largest revenue share drop (7.67%) was observed with Maryland LIVE in 2014 compared to a year earlier. On the other hand, Rocky Gap was the only establishment to boost its revenue share during the period (1.36%).
