Former British football player turned media personality Alan Shearer and gambling operator Coral announced earlier today that they have inked an agreement for the footballer to become the company’s first football ambassador.
The 45-year-old retired footballer previously played as a striker for Blackburn Rovers, Southampton, Newcastle United as well as for England’s national football team. After he retired from football, he started appearing occasionally on BBC One’s Match of the Day. Later on, he became a regular pundit for the program.
Under the terms of the season-long deal, Shearer is to run a blog for Coral and to weekly post his comments on important football and other hot topics. The former football player will also be expected to attend Coral events and to take part in social media activities oriented towards customers.
Commenting on the latest announcement, Coral PR Director Simon Clare said that being one of “the finest footballers of his generation”, Shearer is probably the most important football signing in the history of the British bookmaker.
Mr. Clare further added that a great number of Coral’s gambling customers are also football fans. This is why the company considered it a good idea to engage a popular football personality into its marketing activities. According to Mr. Clare, Shearer will be as dedicated to his weekly blog posts as he was during his time on the pitch.
When asked about his partnership with Coral, the former football player said that he is looking forward to working with the bookmaker. Shearer also noted that he is particularly happy with the chance to present Coral’s gambling customers with his opinions and thoughts on hot topics during the football season.
The so-called Alan Shearer Blog will be hosted on http://news.coral.co.uk/, the bookmaker’s news website. Furthermore, Coral customers will be sent emails with Shearer’s weekly posts.
The former football player is joining a roster of media personalities blogging weekly for Coral, with Sky Sports broadcasters David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd and Scott Minto, who is also a former football player, as well as jockeys Jamie Spencer and Tom Scudamore being among those.
Heavyweight Sport brokered Coral throughout the deal and Alan Shearer was brokered by Mel Chappell and CAA Sports.
