The WPT has just crowned its newest champion. Jared Mahoney topped the field of the partypoker.net WPT Montreal Main Event to have his name added to the WPT Champions Cup and to collect a first-place prize of C$433,410, a $15,400 seat into the season-ending Tournament of Champions, an exclusive Hublot Oceanographic Watch, and the special Playground Poker Club trophy belt.
As it could be seen, the Main Event took place at Montreal’s Playground Poker Club and was a five-day one, with Day 1 featuring three starting flights. The event attracted a total of 697 entries and a prize pool of C$2,366,315 was generated. The top 81 finishers received a share of the money, with a minimum payout worth C$5,860.
Day 5, the event’s final one, saw six hopefuls returning to play the final table and eventually determine the winner. AJ Gambino was the first to go. The player was eliminated in 6th place after he could not make it against Darryll Fish on Hand #24 of six-handed play. Gambino’s payout amounted to C$87,520.
Carter Swidler was the next to hit the rail. He was busted in 5th place by Brian Altman, the only former WPT Champion at the final table. Swidler collected C$108,410 for his efforts. Altman himself was the next to go. Hand #100 was his last one in the Main Event. The player was eliminated in 4th place by Mahoney. Altman took home the amount of C$144,780.
It took 59 hands before another player hit the rail. Chips went back and forth during three-handed play, until Rainer Kempe was eventually eliminated in 3rd place. The player fell victim to the soon-to-be-champion to add C$195,940 to his bankroll.
Heads-up play started with Fish holding 11,150,000 in chips against Mahoney’s 9,700,000. Two-handed battle lasted a total of 50 hands, during which the two survivors played for relatively small pots. Hand #197 turned out to be the last one for the day and the Main Event as a whole.
Mahoney min-raised to 1,000,000 only to see Fish moving all in for his 9,625,000. Mahoney called immediately and tabled [As][Kc] against his opponent’s [Ac][2d]. The board ran out [Ah][8d][7d][6c][5c] and Mahoney won the pot, the WPT title, and the first-place prize of C$433,410. As for Fish, he collected the amount of C$304,343 for his 2nd place in the tournament.
