Connecticut Officials Grant Federal Recognition to Schaghticoke Tribal Nation

News

Representatives of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation announced that the tribe has been granted federal recognition and therefore, it has the right to enter the competition for building the third commercial casino in the state of Connecticut. This is considered a major milestone, given the time and efforts the tribe dedicated to that cause.

In a special statement on the matter, the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation officials revealed that the establishment of a third casino should be regarded as a great opportunity to boost the local economy. They also added that their top priorities are maximizing the economic growth, increasing the generated revenues and fighting the competition from the neighbouring states, which is expected to become more and more intense.

It was also said in the statement that the new name of the business under the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation is Confluence of Rivers Tribal Business Entity, LLC.

In point of fact, the tribe established a business entity with the aim of being allowed to establish a commercial casino within the borders of Connecticut and they remain dedicated to the idea of operating the third Connecticut gambling faculty.

The above information was revealed by Richard Velky, the Chief of Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, who provided documents proving that the tribe has successfully obtained a LLC status for Confluence of Rivers Tribal Business Entity.

Mr. Velky also revealed that one of the main priorities of the tribe was the submission of proposals related to the establishment of a new gaming faculty on the territory of the state.

The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs has denied granting federal recognition to Velky’s group. What is more, the agency has implemented some changes recently, which made experts believe that the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation would never get a second chance to apply for federal recognition.

The town of Kent was among the main opponents of the idea of federal recognition of Schaghticoke Tribal Nation or the Schaghticoke Indian Tribe. Town officials announced they were totally against the gambling expansion. However, the legal battles they started a few years ago had not led to the desired result.

The state of Connecticut has granted federal recognition to two tribes so far – the Mohegan Tribe and Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation that have been in the gambling business for quite some time. They have actually proposed a joint casino project, aimed at fighting the competition coming from the neighbouring states and ensuring plenty of job opportunities for the Connecticut residents.
