This year’s Barcelona Main Event attracted a field of 1,785 entries. By the end of the tournament’s fifth day there were only seven players left. The finalists will come back today to finish off what they started yesterday, namely to conclude final table play and determine the big winner.
Day 5 of the event started with 24 hopefuls who were seated at three tables at Casino Barcelona. It took 13 hours of play on Saturday before organizers called it a day. Up until several minutes before the end of the day, it was believed that Thomas De Rooij would be leading the finalists for what would be the tournament’s grand finale. The Dutch player took the lead from Adam Owen in a spectacular manner with an ace-high hand. However, he could not enjoy his advantage for a long time as Germany’s Uri Reichenstein snatched the lead from him just as the bell rang marking play’s end.
The German has cashed in 11 events over the course of his career, collecting a total of $191,346 from those. Reichenstein scooped his career largest cash earlier this year when he finished second in the Merit Poker Western Tournament 2 $2,200 Main Event for $125,000. Being one of the Main Event’s final seven, the player will improve significantly that result, as each of the survivors entering the tournament’s final day is guaranteed a minimum payout of €230,950. The winner will take home €1,122,800.
Here are all seven finalists and their respective chip counts:
Uri Reichenstein – 11,325,000
Thomas De Rooij – 11,175,000
Adam Owen – 9,800,000
Sebastian Malec – 7,325,000
Zorlu Er – 7,075,000
Andreas Chalkiadakis – 5,050,000
Harcharan Dogra Dogra – 1,760,000
Excluding Reichenstein and Chalkiadakis, whose cash histories show that they have been part of the international poker scene for some years now, although they have not won any major tournaments so far, the other five finalists are not that well known in the international poker community. Otherwise said, all remaining players are today looking for their successful debut to the big poker scene.
Seven-handed play resumes at 1 pm local time at Casino Barcelona.
