Adrian Mateos Climbs in GPI and GPI Player of the Year Rankings

Recent final table appearances in major tournaments have boosted significantly Adrian Mateos’ GPI and GPI Player of the Year scores to help the player go up in both rankings. Following the latest GPI update, traditionally released on Wednesday, the Spanish player now occupies 9th place in the GPI leaderboard with 3,944.03 points, collected over a 36-month span, and 5th place in the PoY leaderboard with 3,269.00 points.

Mateos scored his most recent live tournament cash during the EPT Season 13 Prague festival, the last one in EPT’s thirteen-year history. The player finished 3rd in the €25,500 High Roller for €260,300 in prize money, 398.00 GPI points, and 265.27 GPI PoY points.

Prior to that, the young Spaniard was seen at the tables of the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic festival that took place at the Bellagio in Las Vegas from late November through early December. There, he cashed in three events, of which two high roller ones. The player first took 3rd place in a $1,090 tournament, although the points generated by that finish did not affect his GPI and PoY scores.

Next, Mateos finished runner-up to Jason Koon in a $25,000 High Roller for $247,680, 367.77 GPI and 242.39 GPI PoY points. On the very next day, he took 6th place in another $25,000 High Roller tournament for a payout of $107,520, 283.75 GPI points, and 192.65 GPI PoY points.

Overall, Mateos has made a total of 27 in-the-money finishes since the beginning of 2016. It could be said that the player has attended all major tournaments to have taken place throughout the year and has also cashed in some of them.

His victory in the WSOP $1,500 Summer Solstice is a highlight that definitely deserves to be paid a bit more special attention. In 2013, Mateos won a WSOP Europe gold bracelet for taking down the €10,450 Main Event. However, the piece he captured this summer was his first gold bracelet from the annual Las Vegas WSOP festival. Aside from the shiny non-monetary prize, the player also scooped a first-place prize of $409,171 for emerging the winner from a field of 1,840 competitors.

Including his most recent in-the-money finishes, Mateos’ career live tournament winnings currently amount to more than $6.3 million, not a bad bankroll for a 22-year-old. Apart from being a one-time WSOP Europe Main Event champion, the Spaniard is also known to be a one-time EPT Grand Final Main Event champion. He won the prestigious €10,600 buy-in tournament back in 2015.
