In the weeks prior to the 89th Academy Awards, there was a popular assumption floating around that this year’s ceremony would be a quite predictable one and that La La Land would scoop the statuettes in all the categories it had been nominated. However, as we all saw, things proved to be slightly different. And although Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway declared the above-mentioned La La Land the best picture winner, it turned out that Moonlight was the real victor.
Never shy to share his opinion, Matusow grabbed the opportunity to comment on what will probably remain as one of the most awkward situations in the Oscars’ history. The poker player seems to have not bought it that the wrong winner was announced by mistake. According to him, it was all directed by the “radical left” to cause another racial division scandal. Matusow did not explain what he meant exactly, but he clearly accused the Academy of racism.
The player has been quite active on Twitter these past days. Apart from his Oscars rants, he also informed his followers that he had his first Mike Matusow blow-up in a decade. The player left the ongoing WPT L.A. Poker Classic Main Event way too early. The Mike Matusow blow-up was a term coined to denote the player’s occasional tendency to ruin terrifically good play with a single wrong move.
A recent heads-up clash between Matusow and Phil Hellmuth in an L.A. Poker Classic side event received quite a lot of poker media attention, mainly due to the two players’ long-time rivalry at the poker table. Here it is also good to note that Hellmuth, too, is well-known for his occasional rants while both at and off the poker table. Hellmuth emerged the winner in said event, thus getting some sort of a payback for that one time when he finished runner-up to Matusow in an NBC $20,000 Heads-Up Championship.
