Day 2 of the 2017 PokerStars Championship Barcelona €5,300 Main Event was just as action-packed as expected. It saw 850 players return at the tables of Casino Barcelona on Wednesday, accompanied by 13 entries who took advantage of the late registration option.
This brought the tournament’s overall field to 1,682 participants who generated a massive prize pool of €8,157,700. The top 247 finishers will receive a share of the big money, min-cashes starting from €8,740. As for the winner, he or she will receive a first-place prize of €1,410,000, which represents one more example of why PokerStars’ Barcelona festivals always turn up as pure success.
After fierce battling, Day 2’s starting field was reduced to just 287 survivors. Being so close to the money bubble, there is no doubt that it will burst in the early stages of Day 3.
The Day 2 hopefuls were headed by local player Jose Latorre. The player took hold of the chip lead late on Day 1B after winning a massive pot that propelled him all the way to the top. On Day 2, Latorre retained the chip lead during the first four levels of play. However, another player ended up as the chip leader by the time participants were summoned to bag and tag for the day.
Colombian player Mauricio Salazar Sanches was the one to complete Day 2 of play as the one who had accumulated the largest stack. The player had 507,000 in chips at the end of the day. However, he was followed very closely by Bulgaria’s Rosen Angelov with 497,500 and Sergey Sergeev from Russia with 470,500.
The event’s current chip leader had four previous in-the-money finishes, all of which from Brazilian Series of Poker events. His live tournament earnings currently amount to $10,477. However, being so close to the money bubble of the Barcelona Main Event, the player has excellent chances to increase his bankroll significantly.
Day 3 of the prestigious tournament is set to begin today at noon local time. The remaining players are scheduled to play five 75-minute levels before calling it a day. As mentioned above, they are expected to burst the bubble shortly after the beginning of play. What is more, the field of 287 contenders will likely be slashed by half at least.
The PokerStars Championship Barcelona Main Event will run through Sunday, August 27, when the official final table of eight is set to be played.
Aside from the Main Event, there are several more major events on the PokerStars Championship Barcelona schedule that are yet to determine their winners. Participants in the €10,300 Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller are to return to the Casino Barcelona tables today to play down to a champion. The €10,300 High Roller is slated to begin on August 25 and to run through August 27. The PokerStars Open with a €220 buy-in fee and a guaranteed prize pool of €100,000 is also scheduled to take place on August 25-27.
