The WPT Legends of Poker, the second event on the 2019/2020 schedule of the World Poker Tour, is now under way at The Bicycle Hotel & Casino in Bell Gardens, California.
Players wrapped up Day 1B of the $5,000 buy-in Main Event last night and action is set to resume at noon local time today with the survivors from the two starting flights as well as with latecomers who are planning to register into the tournament before the start of Day 2 today.
As many as 493 contenders entered the tournament during its two starting flights, but only 200 of them made its through all levels they were scheduled to play on their respective Day 1s to advance into the next stages of play.
Kevin Song is leading in the temporary chip counts chart after bagging and tagging 362,500 at the end of Day 1A. WPT Champions Club member Brian Altman will enter Day 2 of the tournament with the second largest stack, good for 303,500. The player, too, entered the WPT Legends of Poker on Day 1A. Day 1B chip leader Linh Truong stands third in the overall chip counts chart with 287,500 ahead of the second day of play.
This year’s Legends of Poker features a guaranteed prize pool of $2 million, but it is yet to be seen whether the guarantee would be surpassed and how much of the overall prize pool would be awarded to the victor.
Day 1A/B Action
The Legends of Poker Main Event kicked off at the host casino on Saturday, August 31 with the first of two starting flights. Day 1A saw 191 entrants take a seat at the poker tables at The Bike. After ten levels of play, only 72 players bagged and tagged for the night.
As mentioned above, it was Kevin Song who put the most chips in his bag. Of his Day 1A chip lead, the player told WPT staff that he thought “he just had the cards at the right time.” He went on that his opponents “would make a straight, but [he] would have a higher straight.”
Song pointed out that while having a big stack gave him some confidence, there was still a long way to the tournament’s finale. The Day 1A survivors will be joined by the 128 players who made it through all ten levels played on Day 1B. The second starting flight of the tournament drew as many as 302 entrants.
Ten more 60-minute levels are set to be played on Day 2 of the Legends of Poker Main Event. Action resumes at noon local time at the host venue. The overall prize pool and the places paid are to be announced once registration closes. The remaining participants are expected to reach the money at some point after dinner break.
The Legends of Poker Main Event winner will become known on September 4 when the tournament’s final table will be played. This is the seventeenth edition of the tournament in WPT’s history. In addition, the Legends of Poker tournament is the second event on Season 18 of the popular poker series.
