Construction of City of Dreams Mediterranean is progressing smoothly and is on track to be completed by the end of 2021, Hong Kong-listed gaming and hospitality company Melco Resorts & Entertainment said in a statement issued earlier this month.
City of Dreams Mediterranean, currently under development in the Cypriot City of Limassol, will be the first integrated casino resort to operate on the territory of Cyprus. Following a bidding process in the fall of 2016, Melco was selected as the preferred developer of the property and was granted 15-year exclusivity over casino gambling in the tiny island republic.
Early this year, Melco tapped Greek construction joint venture Avax-Terna JV as the primary contractor to build its first resort outside Asia.
Avax-Terna recently provided an update on its progress and a timeline for the upcoming construction phases. The project contractor said that all piling works, ground works, and substructure for the hotel and casino resort were completed in September.
Construction workers have since then moved forward with delivering the building structure over the next nine months. Avax-Terna said that they have deployed proven fast track construction methods such as system formwork and pre-fabricated structural steel to ensure timely delivery of the project.
Fitting out works are scheduled to begin next summer. If everything goes according to plan, City of Dreams Mediterranean will be able to welcome its first visitors and guests in late 2021.
City of Dreams Mediterranean in Numbers
City of Dreams Mediterranean is currently under development in Zakaki, Western Limassol. The property will occupy a total gross floor area of 86,000 square meters. It will feature a 16-story hotel tower with more than 500 five-star rooms and suites.
Here are some of the other amenities that will be part of the luxury casino complex:
- Gaming – a 7,500-square-meter casino gaming area with more than 1,000 slot machines and 100 gaming tables;
- MICE facilities – over 9,600 square meters of expo, ballroom, convention, and meeting space; expo center to include a 1,500-square-meter multi-purpose function area;
- Food and beverage – 5 dining outlets and bars;
- Retail – 1,700 square meters of retail space inspired by the iconic streetscape of old Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus;
- Recreation – spa and fitness facilities; indoor and outdoor swimming pools; landscape gardens; sports and leisure facilities, including a football pitch, tennis court, squash court, and jogging trails; a 1,500-seat amphitheater and terraced lawn for live outdoor entertainment
Once fully operational, City of Dreams Mediterranean is expected to attract an additional 300,000 tourists per year to Cyprus and to help the island nation combat seasonality and become an all-year destination.
The integrated resort project is expected to create 4,000 construction jobs a year and 2,400 permanent jobs once operational. Melco projects that its first non-Asian resort will be able to annually contribute about €700 million to Cyprus’ economy after its second year of operation.
Avax-Terna said recently that it has fully mobilized tower cranes and the necessary construction infrastructure for the development of the integrated resort. Several local subcontractors have also been hired to participate in the construction phase, while helping the local economy and creating the promised local jobs.
