French roulette normally uses a single-zero wheel: thirty-seven pockets, including zero. Layout labels and table presentation can differ, so learn what each betting area means before placing chips. Rouge means red and noir means black. Pair means even and impair means odd. Manque covers one through eighteen; passe covers nineteen through thirty-six. Each of these standard groups contains eighteen numbers and pays one to one in profit when it wins. Zero is outside those groups. Ordinary inside bets include one-number straight-up bets, splits and larger combinations. Standard payouts range from thirty-five to one on a single number to five to one on a six-number line. Columns and dozens normally pay two to one. Under ordinary single-zero settlement, the house edge is one divided by thirty-seven, about two point seven percent. If la partage is offered, zero returns half of an eligible even-money stake. That reduces its house edge to about one point three five percent. It does not reduce every bet’s edge. En prison instead holds an eligible stake after zero. A later qualifying win releases the stake without profit; a losing result forfeits it. Repeated-zero treatment varies. Check which option the actual table offers, how repeated zeros settle, chip values and betting deadlines. A French label alone does not guarantee any special rule.
