Outside bets sit in labelled areas beyond the roulette number grid. They cover larger groups of numbers, with lower payouts than straight-up bets. Red or black selects the eighteen numbers of that colour. Odd or even selects eighteen numbers of that type. Low covers one through eighteen, and high covers nineteen through thirty-six. Each of these options normally pays one to one in profit. A dozen covers twelve consecutive numbers: the first dozen is one through twelve, the second is thirteen through twenty-four, and the third is twenty-five through thirty-six. A winning dozen normally pays two to one. A column also covers twelve numbers, but they are spread through the number grid. For example, the first column contains one, four, seven, and so on through thirty-four. Place the chip in the labelled column box. A winning column normally pays two to one. Payout odds describe profit. A winning one-dollar even-money bet earns one dollar in profit, plus your original dollar back: two dollars returned. A winning one-dollar dozen or column earns two dollars in profit, plus the original dollar back: three dollars returned. Zero is excluded from these outside groups. Double zero, where present, is excluded too. Under ordinary rules, either zero makes these bets lose. Some tables offer special zero rules for eligible even-money bets. These do not normally apply to dozens or columns, so check the posted terms. An even-money bet covers eighteen of thirty-seven pockets on a single-zero wheel, or eighteen of thirty-eight on a double-zero wheel. So it is not a fifty-fifty chance. Check the wheel type, table minimum and rules before betting. Only wager what you can afford to lose.
