Spain’s regulated online gambling market generated gross gaming revenue of €125.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2016, the local gambling regulator – Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) – announced on Wednesday. The figure reported reflected a 22.7% increase from the previous quarter and a 32.6% one from the same three months of 2015.

Fourth-quarter turnover amounted to €2.9 billion, up 12.9% from the third quarter of 2016 and almost 20% from the three months ended December 31, 2015.

Looking at Spain’s regulated iGaming sector, sports betting was once again the country’s best performing vertical. DGOJ reported betting turnover of €1.3 billion and revenue of €68.4 million for the fourth quarter of the year. Betting turnover increased 10.7% from the previous quarter and 7.7% from the prior-year period; revenue from that type of offering was up nearly 24% quarter-on-quarter and 30.6% year-on-year.

Casino was Spain’s second best performing vertical. It generated turnover of almost €1.2 billion and revenue of €35.6 million during the quarter in review. The reported turnover reflected a 16.4% increase from the previous quarter and the massive 54% increase on a year-on-year basis. Revenue grew 26.4% quarter-on-quarter and 58.8% from the prior-year three months.

A breakdown of the online casino vertical shows that slot games were the most profitable product offered to local gambling customers. Revenue from those amounted to €16.8 million during the reported quarter. They accounted for 46.7% of the casino bulk.

Roulette was the second most popular and profitable product during the three months ended December 31, 2016. Revenue from that particular casino game totaled €12.8 million and represented 35.5% of the whole. Live roulette offered at Spain-facing online casinos generated revenue of €6.5 million. The remaining €6.3 million came from conventional online casino roulette.

Revenue from blackjack amounted to €6.4 million and accounted for 17.8% of the casino bulk. The overall growth in the online casino sector can best be explained with the regulation of slots back in 2015.

Poker was Spain’s third most profitable vertical during the reported period. Poker turnover amounted to €415.6 million during the fourth quarter of 2016. It increased 10.3% quarter-on-quarter, but dropped nearly 7% when compared to the same quarter of 2015. Revenue from online poker offering totaled €13.8 million, up 10.5% from the third quarter of 2016. Its year-on-year rise was a more modest 4.6% one.

Tournament poker performed slightly better during the final quarter of 2016. Revenue from online poker tournaments amounted to €8.5 million during the reported period and accounted for 55.9% of the whole. Revenue from cash games totaled €6.7 million.

Overall, Spain’s regulated online gambling market generated turnover of €10.9 billion and revenue of €419.71 million in 2016, compared to turnover of €8.5 billion and revenue of €319.1 million reported for the twelve months ended December 31, 2015.
