Edition covered: This review describes the historical five-reel, 20-payline Microgaming desktop edition shown in the original game screenshots below. LCB now files this title under Games Global. The screenshots document that edition; they do not establish current availability at a particular casino.

Dogfather is a colorful 5-reel video slot from Microgaming which has a total of 20 adjustable paylines. It has a very interesting theme which revolves around the concept of dog mafia. The slot is inspired by the world-famous movie the Godfather and the main character in the game is a dog mobster known as the Dogfather. Everything in the slot is directly linked to its prevailing concept – from the symbols on the reels to the game controls. The spin button is shaped as a dog biscuit, whereas, your credits are displayed in a fire hydrant which is an object, loved by all dogs.

You have the chance to choose from the following coin denominations – €0.01, €0.02, €0.05, €0.10, €0.20, €0.25 and €0.50. The maximum number of coins that can be wagered per payline is five. The total bet you can place per spin is €50, whereas, the minimum bet you can put is €0.20, providing that you choose to play with all paylines. In order to adjust the number of paylines in the game, you need to use the ‘Lines’ button at the bottom of the screen.

Dogfather has three special symbols – two types of scatters and one wild, all of which are designed to make the gaming process more entertaining and beneficial for you. The wild symbol depicts the Dogfather, dressed in a suit with a cigar, and it substitutes for all elements, except for the rest of the special symbols in this slot. The scatter symbol depicts either a red fire hydrant or a yellow character called Itchy da Flea. Both of these symbols trigger a bonus feature, providing that you manage to get at least three of them anywhere on the reels.

All of the symbols in the game are linked to its main concept which means that you won’t be able to find any of the standard playing card elements that are typically included in most of the modern video slots. The low-value elements depict a knuckle duster, a revolver, a purple soft toy with piles of cash in front of it, a cigar cutter and a shampoo with gloves. The game has four high-value symbols, all of which illustrate members of the dog mafia.

Paytable and stake units

These line awards come from the original game help. Read each number as coins won for one coin staked on the winning line. Multiply it by the coins per line, then by the coin value to convert it to money. Line wins run left to right, and only the highest win is paid on each selected line. Scatter awards use the total spin stake instead.

Line-win example: five spaniels pay 900 coins for a one-coin line bet. With two coins on that line and a coin value of 0.10, the award is 900 × 2 × 0.10 = 180.00 in the selected currency. Playing all 20 lines at that setting costs 20 × 2 × 0.10 = 4.00 per spin. The 180.00 is the award, before subtracting the spin cost.

Itchy da Flea scatters: three, four or five anywhere on the reels pay 5, 10 or 100 times the total stake, respectively. For example, three fleas on a 4.00 total stake award 20.00, as well as triggering the free spins. Do not calculate this award using only one line’s stake.

Bonus games and features

Dogfather has two main bonus features – Free Spins and Mark Your Territory Bonus. In order to trigger the former, you need to get at least three Itchy da Flea scatters anywhere in view. In such cases, you will receive a total of 13 free spins during which all wins will be tripled with the exception of the bonus wins. The good news is that this bonus feature can be re-triggered if you manage to get more scatter symbols during the free spins.

The Mark Your Territory Bonus is triggered by three, four or five hydrants scattered across the reels. LCB describes a picking round with twelve hydrants. The original help confirms that the bonus can also be triggered during free spins and that the amounts displayed in the bonus have already been multiplied by the total bet: do not multiply those displayed amounts a second time. The archived help does not clearly explain its printed award ranges, so they are not presented as fixed payouts or as a verified pick-count formula here.

During the 13 free spins, the triggering lines and bet are retained. Wins are tripled except for bonus wins, and the free-spin feature can be retriggered. The Dogfather wild substitutes for ordinary symbols but not for the flea scatter or hydrant bonus symbol.

Review summary

Dogfather combines adjustable paylines with two separate feature symbols. Its most important rules are the different stake bases for line and scatter awards, and the exclusion of bonus wins from the free-spin multiplier. Feature triggers and large awards are uncertain outcomes, not a reliable way to make a profit.

Dogfather questions and answers

How many lines does this Dogfather edition have?

It has five reels and 20 adjustable paylines. Total spin cost is the number of selected lines multiplied by coins per line and coin value.

Does the Dogfather wild replace the bonus symbols?

No. The original help excludes the flea scatter and the hydrant bonus symbol from wild substitution.

Are flea scatter payouts based on one line or the whole bet?

They use the total stake for the spin. Three, four and five fleas award 5, 10 and 100 times that total stake, respectively, in addition to the free-spin trigger.

Does the three-times free-spin multiplier apply to the hydrant bonus?

No. The help explicitly excludes bonus wins from the tripling of free-spin wins. The bonus display has already incorporated the total-bet multiplier.

How many free spins do three or more fleas award?

Three, four or five fleas trigger 13 free spins. The triggering lines and bet carry into the feature, and free spins can be retriggered.
