royal feast slotHave you ever dreamed about traveling back to medieval times to join one of those sumptuous royal feasts that supposedly lasted for days on end? You do not need a time traveling machine to achieve this, all it takes is playing Microgaming’s Royal Feast – a colorful five-reel slot, complete with 15 adjustable paylines, wilds, scatters, free spins, and a Gamble feature.

Set in the Middle Ages, the slot revolves around the lifestyle of a medieval king and his courtiers, who have a jolly good time while feasting at a well-laden table. Winning combinations can be created with various suitable symbols that all reflect the festive theme of the slot, including plates heaped with food, the royal chef, a court musician playing the lute, the king with a drumstick in hand and the queen holding a bottle of wine. The symbols are all very easy on the eye despite the bold color palette the developers have used.

Little does it matter whether you are a high roller who enjoys splurging with massive bets or have a tighter gambling budget at your disposal. Either way, you can try out Royal Feast as it offers a broad betting choice to accommodate every bankroll. Betting starts at the moderate amount of $0.15 but bets can escalate to the whopping $75.00 for those who can afford it. Coin values range from $0.01 to $0.25, with spinners having the choice of wagering between 1 and 20 coins on each spin.

Special Symbols

As far as symbols are concerned, one of the things that grabbed our attention when playing Royal Feast was that the game is overloaded with lower-value symbols comprising the standard playing cards. While many other slots designed by Microgaming feature cards for lower-paying combinations, these typically range between Nines and Aces. Meanwhile, Royal Feast is equipped with two additional low payers, the Sevens and the Eights.

To compensate for the extra low-paying symbols that do not even relate to the game’s theme, the developers have included both a wild and a scatter. The gem-studded royal crown rewards players with scatter pays and triggers the free spins round in the slot. The maximum amount you can earn with five scatters stands at 15x your total bet, with the symbols paying in both directions during the free spins only. Two or more scatters activate the bonus spins.

Look for the symbol with the Royal Feast logo because it is wild and can be used as a substitute for all other symbols save for the above-mentioned scatter. The result is more winning combinations for you but the wild logo also returns payouts from 500 to 5,000 coins, depending on the number of identical symbols you get on the same spin.

Bonus Games and Features

What Royal Feast offers in terms of bonus games is pretty much the standard round of 5 free spins, activated by two scattered crowns. At first glance, this sounds extremely beneficial to players due to the fact most slots require at least three scatters to activate bonus spins. Unfortunately, the benefits of the scatter are diminished by the fact the two special symbols need to land on the reels from left to right in order to trigger the feature.

However, the feature is interesting in that the scattered wins are “held”, restarting the free spins. What this means is that each time a scatter is part of a payout, it will remain in place and the reels will respin for free. This continues until there are scatters on all five reels which is to say you can retrigger up to 5 additional spins at no charge.

If you are looking for a bonus game with more cash prizes to add to your balance, you will not find it here. What Royal Feast offers you, instead, is the opportunity to gamble your winnings on lucky spins, which is not always such a good idea. You can use the Gamble feature following each successful spin. The goal is to guess what the right color of a face-down playing card is, red or black. The odds of failing and guessing correctly are pretty much even, but keep in mind that if you indeed do fail, the winnings on your last spin will be forfeited. If your guess is right, your profits are doubled.

Royal Feast is one of those Microgaming slots that appear to be a mixture of positives and negatives. The slot has plenty of great qualities but some of them are ruined by other peculiarities of the gameplay and the rules. Such is the case, with the playing card symbols – there are way too many of those, eight to be precise. Microgaming could have spared us the Sevens and the Eights in favor of some other icons that relate to the theme of the game.

Another thing that struck us kind of funny was the scatter symbol. Sure, it is beneficial because it triggers the free spins feature with two matches only but why do these have to land from left to right on the reels? This considerably decreases the positive impact of the scatter not to mention the symbol pays only from left to right in general, or at least during the base game. This is not normally the case in the majority of five-reel slots, designed by Microgaming. The fact that scatters award only 5 free spins, does not help much, either.

Apart from the above-listed downsides, Royal Feast is a playable and very enjoyable video slot with great visuals, fantastic animations, and attention to detail. Microgaming developers have approached the game with a good dose of humor and the result is an extremely amusing, comic and visually pleasing slot. So why not join the Royal Feast to see what this game is all about for yourself? Everyone is invited as long as they can afford to contribute with a minimum bet of $0.15 at the first betting level.
